About Us

Our goal is to provide people with an opportunity to gain self confidence, personal strength and have FUN! The reality is that dabbling in rock climbing or diving in, we at Brevard Rock Gym know that climbing can teach you many things about yourself and has many health benefits (see “Health Benefits of Climbing” in our “Knowledge” Posts) and we are also aware that some people just want to try something new and have fun. Whatever your goal is with rock climbing we at BRG provide a variety of services to help you meet that goal. From rock climbing birthday parties to an afternoon of outdoor guided rock climbing with the family, summer rock climbing camp to your first outdoor multi-pitch climbing trip, learning to climb for exercise to joining a climbing team, we have lots of opportunities to help meet your goals.

HOW BREVARD ROCK GYM GOT STARTED: In 2004 Susie Baer founded Brevard Rock Gym with the help of local WNC climbers building it with their own hands. After the first year of business BRG, with the help of Jeremy Whitworth, founded the School of Rock Climbing Day Camp and BRG Mountain Guides. In 2007 Susie and a host of local climbers built an addition to BRG and also founded the Brevard Climbing Team with the help of Dan Horne. In May of 2008, after a year and half stint of living in California, Jeremy Whitworth returned to Brevard and bought BRG from Susie and has owned it ever sense.  In the past few years BRG has grown as an NC rock climbing guide service, a notable competitive climbing team, and training ground for local NC rock climbing. Some of our proud accomplishments in the past years:

• - Worked with Looking Glass Outfitters to bring Fred Beckey to Brevard for a slideshow for our climbing community
• - Started a Junior Climbing Team Program that has grown to two teams working with kids 4 to 7 years olds
• - Traveled and competed with our competition team in Alabama, Charlotte, Asheville, Tennessee, and West Virginia
• - Sent two climbing team climbers to USA Climbing Regionals in 2009.
• - Gotten 4 of our rock climbing guides AMGA SPI certified
• - Raised money for the Carolina Climbers Coalition
• - Been the training ground for Peter Eiland, Dan Horne, Eric Eigner, John Averett, and many more strong and well known NC climbers
• - Offered scholarships for climbing team kids
• - Hosted John Bachar and Kurt Smith at the BRG for a shoe demo
• - Worked with Looking Glass Outfitters to host a fundraiser with Lisa Rands
• - Hosted USA Climbing’s Collegiate Climbing Series Competition in 2010 and 2011
• - Hosted American Bouldering Series Competition in 2010
• - Taken many individuals, families, camps and groups on guided rock climbing trip in Pisgah Forest
• - Worked with Appalachian Mountain Institute to provide community climbing programs
• - Began our Guide Under Tutelage (GUT) program for young climbers aspiring to become rock climbing guides
• - Worked with 45+ kids in our Junior and Competitive Climbing Teams in the Spring of 2011
